11/20 HS Physics Recording - Vector Math and the River Problem

Part 1 Part 2

11/20 Physics Update and homework due 12/4

Hi folks, First off, NO CLASS NEXT WEEK!  We are off next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  May your travels be save and your turkey be tasty!   Today we took a look at the concept of projectile motion and we learned how to conquer the infamous boat across the river physics problems.   For homework please take a look at the following websites.   Be sure to master the problems on the quiz I handed back today.  They will be back. (I would recommend redoing the quiz from scratch a few times until you get them all right easily).   Also, try to master the River Boat problem.  They will feature proudly on the next quiz.   Do all 5 of the example river boat problems in this website.   https://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/vectors/Lesson-1/Relative-Velocity-and-Riverboat-Problems Open up the .pdf in this site.  The simulation is the link below. https://www.physicsclassroom.com/Physics-Interactives/Vectors-and-Projectiles/Projectile-Si...

11/13 HS Physics Class and homework due 11/20

Hi folks, Today we spent the majority of the day doing a fairly complex lab where the students had take last week's lab quite a bit farther by attempting to get a Hot Wheels car to reach enough speed to jump EXACTLY 1.5 m through the air.  First everyone needed to calculate the speed needed to jump that far and then they needed to try to find out how long the car needed to accelerate to reach that speed.  This was easily an AP level lab  (I did it in college) and the students really worked hard to try to get it right.   From looking over the quizzes it looks like quite a few folks could use the opportunity to study up on these math concepts.  For homework this week, I'd like you to do the following problems.  These are just the standard "Throw the ball off the tower" problems that we've done in class and that yesterday and today's lab was based off of.  Please feel free to check your notes if your not sure how to do these. 1.  If a cannon wa...

11/6 Physics Recording - intro to Projectile Motion

Part 1 Part 2

11/6 HS Physics and Homework due 11/13

Hi folks, Today we started a unit on projectile motion.  Otherwise known as 2 dimensional motion. This will include using everything we've worked with so far and putting it to use on a new set of problems.  Today we took a look at a typical physics problem that goes a little something like this.  If a ball is thrown off a 20 m tower and it goes 50 m how fast was the ball thrown.  The point of these problems is to see how vertical velocity and horizontal velocity are independent from one another.  Next week we will get a bit deeper into this concept.  We also did a lab today where we brought these problems to life by measuring the distance a Hot Wheels car traveled through mid-air after being launched off of a table. For homework this week:  (Please email if you have any questions. ) Read pages 33- 39 Do the "Think and Solve" problems 2 - 6 on page 42.  Some of these are pretty tricky so give them a shot.  (I've included the answers below)...
